SUBTERRANEAN TERMITE SWARMING SEASON IS UPON US!
The peak swarming season for subterranean termites in Florida ranges from January through May, although swarms to a lesser extent can occur in other months of the year.
Subterranean termites are wood destroying insects that if undetected and untreated can cause extensive damage to your home. In addition to wood, subterranean termites will attack almost anything that contains cellulose. This could include items such as but not limited to: books, newspaper, carpet, cardboard, shoes and insulation (damage to insulation can result in increased cooling and heating costs).
Worker termites gain access to structures by building mud tunnels on foundation walls, plumbing, support piers or through cracks and crevices in the foundation. The worker termites are approximately 1/8 of an inch long and are white or cream colored. The homeowner usually does not see the workers unless they uncover damage done by the termites.
Swarming termites are the ones the homeowner usually sees first. Swarmers are king and queen termites whose sole purpose is to reproduce. The swarmers are black in color, have wings and fly. Swarming usually occurs in the spring during the daylight hours. Although the swarmers will do no damage to your home, it is important to understand that the presence of swarmers in your home is an indicator that you have a termite infestation. In structures that are infested by younger or newly formed termite colonies swarmers may not be present. With this in mind annual termite inspections are highly recommended.
